W-FIVE Season Premiere Investigates How a Career Criminal Goes From Deportee to Canadian Citizen, Nov. 8 on CTV

- Now in its 43rd season, W-FIVE remains Canada's #1 current affairs program, with 57% more viewers than CBC's THE FIFTH ESTATE -

Toronto, ON (October 30, 2008) - In a shocking new investigation that turns the spotlight on Citizenship and Immigration Canada, W-FIVE discovers unsettling details about how a convicted con man fell through the bureaucratic cracks and turned his deportation order into a Canadian citizenship. Join W-FIVE reporter Victor Malarek in the 43rd season premiere of Canada's most-watched investigative series, W-FIVE, returning Saturdays at 7 p.m. ET on CTV (visit CTV.ca to confirm local listings) beginning November 8.

Last season, W-FIVE was seen on average by 816,000 viewers over the course of its 16 original telecasts, ahead of CBC's THE FIFTH ESTATE by 57% (520,000). Audiences in the key A18-49 and A25-54 demos were up 18% and 19% respectively over last year.*

People from around the world who immigrate to Canada often wait years to be granted Canadian citizenship. Given the competition, it would be assumed that Citizenship and Immigration Canada would be extremely diligent about proper background checks and extensive screening when granting citizenships.

Yet, W-FIVE exposes the case of new Canadian citizen Glen Augier, a career criminal originally from St. Lucia who was ordered deported from Canada after being convicted of countless crimes of fraud and forgery, involving attempts to steal millions and leaving some families financially and emotionally devastated.

Now, Malarek and the W-FIVE team have learned that Augier may have actually forged documents in his application to Citizenship and Immigration Canada, while relying upon a supposed Canadian-born father who conveniently died just after he was born. During the in-depth investigation, W-FIVE talks to Augier's three ex-wives and even a senior Government minister to learn why this con man was approved for citizenship without a thorough investigation.

Also in the season premiere, reporter Paula Todd visits Port Hope, a beautiful, historic town some call the prettiest in Ontario, where many have serious concerns about the impact of the invasive nuclear industry that may be affecting lives.

With an ongoing commitment to covering tough, relevant stories in all their shades of grey, W-FIVE launches its 43rd season of investigative journalism. Hosted by CTV NATIONAL NEWS' Lloyd Robertson and Sandie Rinaldo, the award-winning series is the most-watched current affairs program in Canada. Malcolm Fox is Executive Producer and Anton Koschany is Senior Producer of W-FIVE, a presentation of CTV News. Robert Hurst is President of CTV News and Current Affairs.
